Pros: great voice, something like a greatest hits mix
Cons: surely not everyone`s cuppa tea
I`m going to write about Loreena McKennitt`s album 'Live in Paris and Toronto' now as I really enjoyed listening to it.

McKennitt is a Canadian singer, composer, harpist and pianist. Born in Morden, Manitoba of Irish and Scottish descent she is most famous for writing, recording and performing world music with Celtic music and Middle Eastern themes. Probably one or another knows 'The Mummer`s Dance' which was a widespread success. This song can be found on this album, too.

'Live in Paris and Toronto' is a two CD live album, released in 1999. It is a complete performance of 'The Book of Secrets' (CD No.1) and a carefully chosen selection from 'The Visit and The Mask' and 'The Mirror'. At first, I wasn`t sure about buying it as I already had the songs on other CDs but I found some slight differences and so finally bought it.

To me live music is what shows the musician's real power. The songs are interpreted a bit slower than on the other albums (except 'The Highwayman") but all group members give noticeably everything.

One thing I really like about McKennitt`s music is that she`s using literary works as sources of lyrics. My favourite one here is the 'The Highwayman' which was originally a narrative poem by Alfred Noyes. It tells the story of a nameless highwayman who is in love with a landlord's daughter named Bess. An insanely jealous stableman betrays him to the authorities which leads to a brutal death for both the lovers. McKennitt interprets the poem in a very touching way. I`m banned and fascinated every time I hear that song.

This album is definitely worth buying for lovers of McKennitt`s music. Also, I can`t imagine a better introduction to those of you who have never listened to McKennitts music before. See yourselves!
