As you can see from one of my former reviews this is not my first Katie Melua album. After enjoying "Pictures" that much I decided to get her debut album 'Call Off The Search'. This masterpiece of pop, jazz, blues and world music hit the British charts in 2003 when Melua was aged 19. Her crystel clear, warm and touching voice is often compared to Nora Jones, as well as her style of singing is. Well, to me her voice is more girlish and direct and less lethargic than Nora Jones voice and also there`s a more striking instrumentation accompanying her. Unfortunately there are just two tunes written by Katie on this album: "Belfast (Penguins and Cats)" and "Faraway Voice." "Belfast" is a guitar ballad about Melua's experience of her time in the troubled capital of Northern Ireland. 'Faraway' is a tribute to Eva Cassidy, who only after her tragical death found an audience. 4 songs are covered ... by: Delores J. Silver ("Learnin' the Blues"), John Mayall ("Crawling up a Hill"), Randy Newman ("I Think it's Going to Rain Today") and James Shelton ("Lilac Wine"). A final six songs on the album were by Mike Batt, which is the manager of Melua. Following I`ll give you a short description of some songs so you get a better imagination of what her music is like: No 1: Call Of The Search: ... is jazz/easy listening. Accompanied by a slow melodic piano and an orchestra she sings that she has now found that one, to call off the search. No 2: Crawling Up A Hill: ... is one of my favourite songs on this album. It is more on the bluesy side but full of energy, too. This song deals with having a boring job where she feels like "my life is like a slow train crawling up a hill." I really likemthat one. The way she plays with her voice is just amazing. No 3: The Closest Thing To Crazy: ... "How can happiness feel so wrong? How can misery feel so sweet?" sings Katie on this melodic ballad. You can feel a deep sadness listening to this song. No 4: "My Aphrodisiac Is You": ... is as good as 'Crawling Up A Hill'. To me it sounds a bit like sung in a bar. Melua`s debut album was a great success. It reached the top five in Ireland. In the UK, the album sold 1.2 million copies and spent six weeks at the top of the charts. It consists of 12 songs which are all either jazzy, bluesy or both. All in all, this composition is calming one down. It is great for romantic evenings as well as for thoughtful nights on your one. Sung by a bluesy, clear and moving voice her album is just right for you, if you like soothing and mellow music. See yourself! |
