Who`s Patti Smith and how did I come across her music? Patricia Lee Smith alias Patti Smith is a US- American punk and rock musician and poetess. She was influential in the birth of punk rock and therefore called Godmother of Punk. The first Patty Smith song I ever listened to was Because the Night and it really surprised me because I didn`t know it was sung by her, too. After all I knew the song but sung by Jan Wayne. However, I liked (and still like!) the Patty Smith version much better. There`s just so much power in her voice, so much natural expression and deep emotions. Well, this is simply what all Patty Smith songs are like: Powerful, real and full of passion. Easter: Easter was Patty Smith`s third album. Released in 1978 it became her most successful record. Popular songs are Because the Night which is co-written with Bruce Springsteen, Easter and Rock N Roll Nigger. Until 1974 Patty Smith was performing music herself with just a guitarist and a keyboarder but in 1975 the Patty Smith Group was signed by and so Easter was produced by five musicians (There were actually six of them but one got sick and so couldn`t contribute to the album). There are two album sides and a bonus track: Side one 1."Till Victory" – 2:45 2."Space Monkey" (Smith, Ivan Kral, Tom Verlaine) – 4:04 3."Because the Night" (Smith, Bruce Springsteen) – 3:32 4."Ghost Dance" – 4:40 5."Babelogue" (Smith) – 1:25 6."Rock N Roll Nigger" – 3:13 Side two 1."Privilege (Set Me Free)" (Mel London, Mike Leander, Psalm 23) – 3:27 2."We Three" (Smith) – 4:19 3."25th Floor" (Smith, Kral) – 4:01 4."High on Rebellion" (Smith) – 2:37 5. "Easter" (Smith, Jay Dee Daugherty) – 6:15 Bonus track (CD reissue) "Godspeed" (Smith, Kral) – 6:09 Different from its two predecessors, Easter integrates various musical styles. It is still including classic rock and roll, folk, spoken word and pop music, though. Not only the album`s title Easter is a religious allusion but also several songs are full of biblical and especially Christian imagery. Privilege (Set Me Free)", for example, is essentially a prayer. Also Smith`s notes for the song "Easter" cite Catholic mataphors of baptism, communion and the blood of Christ. What about the other songs? This album really offers a bit of everything. 25th Floor, High on Rebellion and Rock N Roll Nigger are classic rock songs, Ghost Dance is very folk- like, Babelogue is spoken word and Because The Night is a pop song. Well, what else would one like to know about this album? Sure, whether there`s anything I don`t like about it. Yeah, there is. The song Space Monkey really puts me off. Why? Well, it`s just going on my nerves. All this ape-like screaming and shouting. That`s just annoying. But really apart from that it`s just a great album. See for yourself. |
