Jose Gonzalez - In Our Nature How I came across this CD: A few days ago I my best friend and I had planned a long video night – too bad that we always forget one tiny detail: on Sunday our video shop is closed… We ended up sitting on her bed, listening to some of her music while we were talking a bit. She has a whole bunch of CDs I’ve never heard of, most of them out of her boyfriend‘s music archive. Suddenly I was captured by the sound of a guitar and a singer – the “silent” songs by Jose Gonzalez… About Jose Gonzalez: His name sounds pretty…Latin, I’d say. That’s why I wondered why his music didn’t sound too much like the typical Latin rhythms you’d expect, plus he was singing in English. My friend told me that he was the child of Argentinean immigrants in Sweden – and himself born in Sweden. So that was the reason. And thus…somehow his roots haven’t got totally lost. The longer we listened to his album the more I realized the influence of his origin… Later I read that – of course – at home his parents used to play folk music from Latin America, especially the Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, today one of Jose’s idols. Jose says: "When I started playing guitar my father encouraged me a lot. He gave me two song books. One was thick and yellow with Beatles' songs and the other was full of bossa nova." About his music: When I listen to Jose’s album “In Our Nature” I still can’t believe that he took his first steps as a musician in some hardcore punk bands. It’s very different to his classically-inspired style as a solo musician. His music is very calm, slow and not loud at all. But it surely has a very strong energy; it’s vibrant and could also be described as dark, with a brooding intensity. His guitar playing is very delicate and his gentle vocals and crystal-clear voice quickly make you travel into a dream of melancholy. About his lyrics he says: “It’s a mixture of personal and other people’s stories. I don’t want to be specific on certain events or be so obvious. I generally end up writing about how I feel, but I also think that it’s a good way to experience things and then just move on from there.” In his second album "In Our Nature" José Gonzalez' wants to “bring out the primitive aspects of human beings." His first album "Veneer" went platinum in the UK and Ireland and sold more than 700,000 worldwide.
