How I came across this movie:
As a movie-maniac I especially fall for romantic movies. When “Pride and Prejudice” was released in 2005 it was a must to see! I hadn’t read Jane Austen’s novel from 1813 but I knew it was a great love story that played in the 19th century.

Plot:
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet live with their five daughters on their working farm in rural England at the turn of the 19th century. Their financial situation is not the best although they manage to live up to a certain standard. When the young and wealthy Mr. Bingley appears Mrs. Bennett hopes for a marriage with her eldest daughter Jane. They both fall in love with each other but are too shy to show their feelings. Bingley’s reserved friend Mr. Darcy mistakes Jane’s shyness for indifference and advises his friend to leave.
Her sister Elisabeth dislikes Mr. Darcy right from the start. The stories she hears about him are confusing. Is he the one to blame for Jane’s heartsickness? Did he defraud the charming Lieutenant Wickham, who was once like a brother to him until their father died? Is he really as cold and stiff as he seems to be?
The path of love is often full of misunderstandings and confusion. Let’s see where it leads…

What I really like about this movie:
I think the movie captured really well the atmosphere of 19th century rural England. It’s like a journey in time. You see the Bennet’s farm full of life, chaotic, a normal family-life. And you see the wealthy society: their rules, their balls, their way of life, their pride and prejudices…
I like French and British films in general and this French-British co-production is a great work!
Keira Knightley did a great job acting the heroine Elisabeth. She and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy are just the perfect cast! They make Elisabeth and Darcy vivid, complex and deep characters.

• Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet

My rating:
Plot: 5 stars *****
Acting: 5 stars*****
Music: 5 stars*****

Final rating:
A heart warming film for cold or rainy evenings. Romantic movie for the first date, fun to watch with your girl-friends, even a good movie to watch on your own. I can’t tell if it’s as good as the novel. Some critics say that it focuses more on the comedian aspects than on the social criticism. But then it’s always hard to squeeze a whole book into 127 minutes. It surely is mostly an entertaining romance but I didn’t expect anything else.
