Love actually “General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed – but I don’t see that – seems to me that love is everywhere.” Sometimes we feel lonely and it seems there is no love in the world. In those moments we should just turn on our DVD player and push the button. A great movie is waiting there for you. It will show you that LOVE IS ALL AROUND… How I came across this movie: One day my flatmate came to me – running: “Jane, you HAVE to watch this film. I saw it yesterday with some friends. It’s absolutely amazing!! Let’s watch it tonight, pleeeaase!” Now there were some facts that underlined her request so that I couldn’t resist: 1) it is a BRITISH movie ;) 2) it is a film about LOVE 3) it is a COMEDY 4) it has a great CAST I remember four of us sitting on my couch and holding our tummies ‘cause we couldn’t stop laughing. And sniffing into our Kleenex ‘cause sometimes love is cruel, sad and affecting. When it was over another flatmate came home. We flounced out of my room and were shouting all in a tumble. We couldn’t wait to show her this great film…and watched it all over again ;) Since then I have watched this movie many times – every time when I was sad or somehow lonely or when I just needed a movie to cheer me up or give me something to love and hope. About this movie: Love actually is the direction debut of Richard Whalley Anthony Curtis and got nominated for the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film and for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy as well as for the Best Screenplay. The film won the Empire Award for Best British Film and Curtis himself was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Director. Curtis also wrote the romantic comedy films Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones's Diary and Notting Hill. Plot: Love actually is a movie about a whole bunch of people who all have their own little story going on and who are somehow all connected. These 10 episodes are all about love – in its most diverse forms of appearance: The prime Minister falls in love with a secretary… A writer whose girlfriend cheats on him with his brother escapes to France where he meets his new Portuguese housekeeper – and discovers that love is a language of its own… A long-married wife who finds out that this good-looking young girl might be more than her husband’s colleague… Hidden love for a best friend’s wife… A young boy who is determined to conquer a girl’s heart… The love between a son and his stepfather… A lighting-up office crush … And an ageing rock star and his manager who have their very special relationship… All these stories take place in London the weeks before Christmas and have their (lucky and unlucky) climax on Christmas Eve. Cast: The cast is great! Hugh Grant is the funniest Prime Minister ever and was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actor! Emma Thompson won the Empire Award for Best British Actress and was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Martine McCutcheon won the Empire Award for Best Newcomer. Colin Firth made my legs turn to jelly…and makes a perfect pair with Lúcia Moniz. Liam Neeson is a caring stepfather and suddenly meets Claudia Schiffer! Bill Nighy won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor and other awards. Other well known names are Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Heike Makatsch, Billy Bob Thornton and Rowan Atkinson. Furthermore: • Chiwetel Ejiofor • Andrew Lincoln • Laura Linney • Rodrigo Santoro • Gregor Fisher • Kris Marshall • Abdul Salis • Martin Freeman • Joanna Page • Olivia Olson • Ivana Milicevic • January Jones • Elisha Cuthbert • Shannon Elizabeth • Denise Richards • Lulu Popplewell Music: On the soundtrack you will find songs for every mood and situation. Old classics and new songs have been combined to perfectly underline ups and downs. Joni Mitchell and Dido make sad scenes even more heart-breaking while the Beach Boys or Girls Aloud “Jump” for love. My rating: Love actually is one of my favourite films. If you have enjoyed Curtis’ earlier comedies you won’t be disappointed by this one. Plot: 5 stars ***** Cast: 5 stars ***** Music: 5 stars ***** This movie shows all of love’s facings and is a true masterpiece! |
