Scrubs` JD in an uncomparable love story!

Rating of the author: published on 15.07.2008 by ciarapet
Pros: Brilliant novel and true-to-live story, amazing pictures, beautiful soundtrack
Cons: Nothing I can think about!
Everybody who knows JD from the American TV series "Scrubs" will agree with me that Zach Braff, who plays the role of Dr. John "J.D." Michael Dorian, has a greatly aptitude for acting, especially when using his gestures and mimic art (very expressive with his internal thoughts at the hospital).

The fact that Zach Braff is an extraordinarily handsome man may not be an issue for everyone but that was another reason for me to watch his self-written and directed film "Garden State", starring:

* Zach Braff as Andrew Largeman
* Natalie Portman as Sam
* Jackie Hoffman as Aunt Sylvia Largeman
* Ian Holm as Gideon Largeman
* Peter Sarsgaard as Mark
* Alex Burns as Dave
* Ron Liebman as Dr. Cohen
* Method Man as Diego

Produced by Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher and Danny DeVito the 2004 film was nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. Braff as lead actor received Best New Director from the Chicago Film Critics Association, the Florida Film Critics Circle's Pauline Kael Breakout Award, Best Debut Director award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, Breakout of the Year from the Phoenix Film Critics Society and Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

:::Garden State:::
The film begins with a terrifying scene where 26 year old Andrew Largeman is sitting in a crashing aeroplane. Fortunately it was just a nightmare which ends up with a phone call from his dad Gideon Largeman, who futilely tries to reach his son to refer him the mothers dead and date of funeral.

Andrew, a struggling actor, characterised with dyslexia who is living in a chalk-white apartment without any furniture apart from his bed, plucked up courage and went on his way from Los Angeles to his hometown in New Jersey for the first time in nine years.
At the funeral of his paraplegic mother he surprisingly meet his old friend Mark again, who is now a gravedigger. The same night Andrew gets reacquainted with other old friends at a party where love stories and drugs drive him over the edge.

Caused by his severe headaches and avolition the early next morning Andrew has a doctor's appointment that he got booked from his father, who is a psychologist. After the mother became paraplegic he prescribed his son anti-depressant (lithium) to “protect” him from his own feelings of guilt. Andrew has stopped taking them when he recognized that these pills destroy his soul with the consequence to avoid his dad, too.

In the waiting room Andrew has to bother about a dog that is on heat, where he first meet the local girl Sam who is trying to give him some clues to get rid of the dog. Both of them feel attraction to each other so that later on Andrew gives Sam a ride home on his motor bike. After a day together full of personal confessions and feelings they felt even more liking to each other and initiate a relationship even if Andrew knows that he will go back to Los Angeles.

Before Andrew is on his take-off there is a lot happening between the young pair, him and his friend Mark as well as the relation to his father.
Amazing scenes, colourful pictures and the fitting background music (which was chosen by Zach Braff) make the love story so unique. You will hope for a happy ending - but is that the outcome Zach Braff wants it?

You will only know it if you watch the film and you will definitively not regret it.

:::Additional Information:::
In his directing and writing debut, Zach Braff combines fictional with autobiographical themes. The actor himself lived in South Orange New Jersey, where most of the movie was shot. His mother also is a psychologist which gave him the inspiration to write about. The director and lead actor tried to choose a certain soundtrack that included songs which had a deep meaning to him in his personal life such as:

* "Don't Panic" by Coldplay
* "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" by Colin Hay (known from Scrubs: "Superman")
* "Blue Eyes" by Cary Brothers
* "One of These Things First" by Nick Drake
* "The Only Living Boy in New York" by Simon & Garfunkel
or my favourite:
* "Such Great Heights" by Iron & Wine (cover of The Postal Service from the album Give Up)

However, the most important fact for Braff was to create a movie that convince people to take action for their lives, because it is far too short to spend the whole life with waiting for something else to start.

:::DVD:::
In December 2004 the DVD released with a wider popularity then in theatres, including commentaries, deleted scenes and featurette.
Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, Dubbed, DVD-Video, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC
Language: English
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish
Number of discs: 1
Run Time: 102 minutes.

:::Result:::
I score "Garden State" with 5 STARS and I would give more if I could.
Zach Braff convince himself with his great performance as Andrew Largeman as well as with his great choice for starring actors, amazing scenes and the suited soundtrack.
In my opinion the best true-to-live love story ever.
