I`m sure most of you guys out there know ‘The Cranberries’- an Irish alternative rock band that rose to mainstream popularity in the 1990s. Surely the vast majority of people have listened to their most popular song ‘Zombie’ and probably to many other ones. But still: I think it is worth writing a review about my favourite Cranberries album: ‘No need to argue’. The band: Dolores Mary O'Riordan Burton- Vocal, Guitar, Keyboards, Piccolo Noel Anthony Hogan- guitarist and co-songwriter Michael Gerard Hogan- other instruments Fergal Patrick Lawler- other instruments The album: ‘No Need to Argue’ was the bands 3rd album and their most successful one to date. It was released in 1994 and has sold about 16.7 million copies worldwide. - Album characterisation: - the album's mood is quite dark - rocky, emotional but often melancholic songs - distortion and increase of volume used - Dolores voice is clearer, without the previous album's double and triple voice layering - topics are: war, death, love and disappointment - Track Listing: - "Ode to My Family" - "I Can't Be With You" - "Twenty One" - "Zombie" - "Empty" - "Everything I Said" - "The Icicle Melts" - "Disappointment" - "Ridiculous Thoughts" - "Dreaming My Dreams" - "Yeat's Grave" - "Daffodil Lament" - "No Need to Argue" - "So Cold in Ireland" (Not included on LP) - An outline of the most popular songs: - ‘Zombie’- is about the IRA bombings in 1993 - ‘Yeat's Grave’- is about W. B. Yeats and quotes one of his poems, No Second Troy - ‘Ode to My Family’ - ‘Ridiculous Thoughts’ My opinion: I myself like most of the songs. My favourite ones are, of course, ‘Zombie’, but also ‘Ridiculous Thoughts’, ‘Disappointment’ and ‘Twenty One’. I like the albums meaningful lyrics and the way they are presented. In combination with the melodies they make a very affecting composition that calms you down and makes you think about life. This is not the kind of music I`d listen to while doing the dishes. You really need to take your time to enjoy these songs. I wouldn`t advice you to listen to this album when you`re in a sad mood. It might make you even more depressed since some of the lyrics are really heavy. There`s one thing I don`t like about this Cranberries album: There are several tune and also lyric repetitions in some of the songs. This is what makes you put away the CD for a while after listening to it for the 3rd time. Unfortunately the members announced they were taking some time to pursue their individual careers in September 2003. So it`s not sure more albums will follow. For those of you who are interested in those that followed ‘No need To Argue: • To the Faithful Departed (April 1996) • Bury the Hatchet (April 1999) • Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (October 2001) Summarising I`d say it is an album worth its money because it`s different considering the musical style and the use of voice and instruments (distortion, clear voice, increase of volume). If you haven`t listened to Cranberries, yet, this is the right album to start with. Enjoy! |
