Who doesn`t know the Skatalites? The godfathers of SKA! For me they are unseparably linked with Doreen Shaffer. She`s the one that gives their music a voice, a mellow sound full of passion and power. Sugar, sugar is actually not my favourite Doreen Shaffer song but there`s no other way rating her album ‚Adorable’, as it is not in the list, yet. my favourite ones are Who`s gonna dub me and Mi come back. Playlist ’Adorable’: 1. Sugar sugar 2. Turn your lamp down low 3. Groovy kind of love 4. Holdin on 5. Closer and closer 6. Adorable you 7. Lets find each other tonight 8. Whos gonna love me 9. Golden love 10. Time for change 11. Nice time 12. Whos gonna dub me 13. Mi come back ‚Sugar, sugar’ is the first song on this album which was released in 1997. ‚Adorable’ was the result of a joint tour with the Skatalites. The lyrics on that album aren`t extremly deep-going or anything. They are mainly about love and easy to understand. But that`s not the thing. It is the way Doreen sings. Her voice is ever so warm and sensitive, but it is strong and powerful at the same time. Not to forget the really cool SKA-background music: Trumpets, saxophones and the deep sound of the bass let this music sound very live-affirming and joyful. It makes you wanna tip your toes. A live-concert with Doreen Shaffer and the Skatalites is a must-see, -feel and -hear if you`re into SKA! They are expressing so much inner peace and passion for music on the stage. It`s undescribable. In case you don`t know SKA at all ’Adorable’ might be the right album to start with although I wouldn`t call it representative for the Skatalites as their music sounds very different without Doreen Shaffer ... much more instrumental. Anyhow, luv it! |
