Last week I grabbed a friend and took her to a concert. She was laughing heartily when I took out my teeny-weeny Fujifilm Finepix Z1 digital camera. But I knew better! It wasn’t the first time people had smiled at my cam saying something like “Looks nice – does it also make any pics?!” I’m used to it: the camera only measures 90 x 55x 19 mm, which really is super compact. Also its design is so beautifully classy and sporty at the same time (I have the one in black and silver) that it wouldn’t be surprising if its looks really were everything it has to offer. But that’s far from being the truth! Don’t be bluffed by size and design: what you get is a real good quality camera! When it came on the market in 2005 it was the first Fujifilm digital camera using folded optical lens technology. Therefore, even if you use the 3x optical zoom there is no extension whatsoever on the cam’s exterior. Together with the 5.1 megapixels you already have a great starting point for shooting some nice pics. The camera produces files with 640 x 480 up to 2,592 x 1,944 pixels image size (JPEG). You can look at your shots immediately on the generous 2.5 inch LCD, which is great also for watching movies (AVI). Since the display is so big you can’t avoid touching it – which isn’t a problem at all: it’s covered with glass and you can wipe it clean without difficulty. If you want a camera for all places and all times – the Z1 is what you need. The display is protected by hardened glass and the lens by a sliding lens cover, which also functions as power button to turn the camera on and off. With its compact aluminium case and only 146g weight you can just have it in your pocket when going on a hike, visiting a city, going to a party or….a concert. My friend’s smile soon gave way to amazement. The cam offers ISO sensitivity from 64 up to 800. For the concert I chose 800 and got quite clear photos which brilliantly captured the colours of the light show. Also I chose “Night Mode”, one out of five scene modes (among them also Natural Light, Sports, Portrait, Landscape). In addition it has red eyes protection which seems to work well, at least I hardly ever have red eyes on the photos that I take with my Z1. The description says it’s ready for action in 0.6 seconds. I’m not quite sure, but I doubt that this is true. With my camera at least being quite slow is the only disadvantage I see about it. Also the buyer should be prepared to spend some money on extra equipment. What you get is a 16 MB xD-Picture Card, a NP-40 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery, a docking station, a wrist strap, a power adapter (AC-5VW), a mini USB cable, an A/V cable, a software CD and a manual. What I bought in addition was a 1GB picture card (16 MB is next to nothing!), two extra batteries (one of which still is in its packaging – two in total are enough) and a case. Altogether I can really recommend the Fuji Finepix Z1 to people who want a camera to take along when travelling or going out. Its small size and good protection of lens and display are incredible advantages, because you can just carry it in your pocket and have it ready the moment you need it. Professionals, of course, who prefer quality to convenience would probably chose a different model. |
