friends you make abroad

hey there,

yesterday I got an email from a friend I met in Australia. I hadn't heard from her for a while and I was surprised and happy to see her mail in my inbox. but it wasn't good news she brought...her boyfriend - whom I also know from Australia - had left her for another woman. but then she wrote that she is planning a trip to some friends she made while travelling. they are still in contact and invited her to cheer her up. she wrote that there must be something special about these friendships from abroad.

I think she's right. maybe because those people you meet abroad get to know the best of you. they meet you out of your ususal surrounding, without any prejudices, without any idea of how you are when you're stressed out after work or when you're in a bad mood. they get to know you as a relaxed person, eager to experience new things, willing to talk to anybody. maybe that's why they don't want you to get hurt and they offer their help even from the other side of the world!

do you know what I mean? have you made such friends when you were travelling?

Hey great that you mention that! When I was in Sweden for an internship I´d met a lot of warmly people (i got to know them at school). I stayed there for quite a long time (a whole school year) so after a while I felt very homesick. What I wanna say is that you might meet a lot of people in the other country but there are only a few or just one person who really is your friend at the end of the day and understand you, feels with you. Luckily I got such a friend abroad and I felt not that lonely (also because she spoke very good English :) and we still stay in contact.

It's great to have friends outside your own little world cause they may think in an other way and can help you with their experiences. I mentioned that cultures are so different even if there are just a few miles ago.

Would be great if anyone  else can tell stories about friends abroad.
