Summer holidays

I want to go on summer holidays with my boyfriend. But there's a rub: it has to be cheap...

Yesterday I checked flights, bus tours, train prices...nothing found. hmm....any ideas where we could go?

We really want to have a bit of everything: culture, nature (to do some hiking) and maybe a nice beach to relax. I was thinking about Spain, Turkey, Greece...maybe it's just too late for cheap flights in summer :(

Will you go somewhere for summer holiday?

croatia

Hello jane,

perhaps you know ryainair. Just check on their website. I found half a month ago cheap flights to a new destination in croatia. I think it was the capital (zagreb) but could also be split (in the south).

Croatia should have everything you like. in the south you've the great area on the adria with clear blue water and nice diving sites. up on the northern parts you've a lot of national parks with wonderful hiking trails. And Croatia isn't that expensive till now. If you like to fly to the main-tourist-summer-holiday-destinations (turkey, greek, spain) you need to pay more, if you now starting to look for cheap holidays you probably won't find any down there in the south. I think to book early bird specials you need to start in november to december, now it's too late.

thank you so much! sounds great. I think a friend of mine had been to croatia a few years ago, they went hiking through a national park and they loved it. I'll definitely keep that in mind!

I think you're right, it's too late for spain...

I don't plan anything. I first need to save some money before I make another journey again.

hey there! maybe you can help me with a decision to make: my mountainbike is pretty old, I think it must be about almost 10 years now and doesn't work properly anymore. the breaks, the gears, the chain...almost all important parts are affected...by age. so I went to the next shop and asked how much it would cost me to repair all these parts. When I heard his reply I thought he was kidding: £150! I could buy a new bike for that price!

I mean my one is ok for criusing through the city or to go to the next supermarket. but in summer I wanna go on a bike trip for a week or longer and therefore I need my bike to be in good condition.

what do you think, should I have it repaired or buy a new bike? maybe second hand? I'd like to get a trekking bike, can you recommend a special brand? or what should I check when buying a second hand one?

Please help!!

bike

Hi jane,

You like to go on a bike tour, cool. You should consider that you probably need some bags to fix on your bike. So your carrier should stand the weight of your bags.

Repairing is a difficult decision. I repaired the bike of a friend, where we first thought ‘man buy a new one’. But when we got the parts and did most of the work by our own (breaks, cable stuff, light) and got a little help with repairing the broken rear axle we didn’t spend that much. And he loved his bike he would never throw it away. Actually it was rather a reanimation than a repair.

To buy a second hand bike isn’t wrong, but check out for the outer tyre (if there are cracks), also check the cable stuff on the breaks and if the chain is silver (not corroded), same with the parts of the shift (the space between them). Same with the frame, it shouldn’t been corroded.

On a new one, check if it is right for you how is your feeling while sitting on it. Also ask if they want your old one (if you don’t want it anymore), perhaps they can need some parts and you the money. Which is important while buying a new one, you should look for shimano shift and breaks, it’s the world leader and the stuff is working.

And to prevent your new bike on corroding and similar, you should always (like once a month if it isn’t raining a lot) oil the chain with special oil and also get penetrating oil, which is to keep the cable stuff smooth and the moving parts on your bike.

Hope it helps.
