The Body Shop vs. Lush

I've read quite a few reviews about some The Body Shop products. They always criticized the high prices of these products. All I knew about The Body Shop was that they care for example for animal welfare, the environment and fair trade: principles that deserve to be supported in my opinion and a reason to pay the higher price.

I started to investigate and found some very controversial articles.

I didn't know that The Body Shop was sold in 2006 and now belongs to L’Oreal; a company that – as far as I know – doesn’t care too much for these ethical questions The Body Shop stands for.

Personally I don’t buy at The Body Shop very often – partly because of the price, mainly because I prefer Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics.

Lush products are meant to be vegetarian, some are vegan, and they are handmade and not tested on animals (same as The Body Shop).

I’ve always had a very good feeling when buying creams, shampoo, soaps and other stuff at Lush – now that I’ve read these partly very negative articles about The Body Shop I started to wonder if Lush has a clean slate or if it’s just the same with this shop.

I think it’s quite hard to keep yourself informed about these things that are so important if you care for what and how you buy. I always try to use my purchasing power as a consumer to move things to the better, to act responsibly and in a sustainable way. But I suppose in the end you’ll never know if you’ve really made the right decision…

Who knows more about “sustainable cosmetic brands”?

I prefer Lush

Hi,

I prefer the Lush products. I often get presents from friends which contain The Body Shop products, but if I buy my own cosmetic stuff, especially soaps and bath additionals like bubble balls (oh I love them), I go to a Lush Shop.I didn't heard about the selling thing, too. I'm going to do some research on the internet. I think people will pay the price if the product is well, but still it is expensive and it is a con in our 'I-want-it-cheaper'-community. You always looking for a cheaper, the cheapest actually, price.

I prefer Lush as well. I've done some research on their homepage and at leat there they state that: "... the Lush policy means the company will not do business with any supplier that is engaged in any animal testing for any purpose, be it cosmetics, food, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc."

I've never used the "Bath Ballistics", but I just got the "Sakura" as a present. I am looking forward to testing it ;))

which are your favourite products?

Havent tried both of it yet. So all of you would agree that Lush represents good quality? Everytime when I see the shop I past it because my skin is very sensitive and I dont think that it is kind to my skin. What would you say? Is there anything like bodymilk that is skin friendly for people with very dry skin?

don't worry, I am sure your skin will we fine with Lush products. exactly because it is not chemical at all and because they only use very natural ingredients like cocoa butter, almonds, nuts, banana, all kind of fruits...it won't harm the most sensitive skin! maybe your skon will need some time to adapt to these new kind of products but I am convinced you'll find the right thing for you. just ask the staff, they are always very helpful and will tell you what you need!
